stage@leeds Youth Theatre
“Creativity is as important as literacy” (Sir Ken Robinson)
stage@leedsyoungcompany is our brand new youth theatre situated in the stage@leeds theatre complex at the University of Leeds. We decided to start a youth theatre due to the fall in drama provision in schools and the belief that participation in Theatre and Performance provides key skills for life and should therefore be available to everyone no matter what their background or circumstances. With this in mind we have designed stage@leedsyoungcompany to be a fun, creative space where commitment, support and a collaborative spirit will allow participants to explore their own creativity without fear or prejudice.
- Open to all, no experience required and no auditions.
- We currently run one group for 11-15yrs but we are planning to expand our age range.
- Affordable (funded scholarships are available – details will eb sent with your application pack)
- Professional tuition in a state of the art modern theatre.
- DBS checked professional staff supported by student volunteers.

What will the sessions be like?
Our sessions always begin with physical and vocal warm ups, We will then spend some time exploring individual theatre techniques (improvisation, working with text, devising, character work and many others). Each term we will have one main ‘theme’ that will form the basis of a piece of work that we share with friends and family at the end of the term. The themes we choose could be inspired by the stage@leeds theatre season, the work of our theatre and performance research staff, events on the University Campus or ideas from our YC members. Every session will end with theatre games. There will also be occasional one-off sessions where we focus on specific skills including but not limited to stage combat, circus arts and playwriting.
Spring 2019: this term we are looking at physicality, characterisation and playwriting
