Areas of interest and specialism

  • My areas of interest are creating garments based on classical technique using original methods and materials to create clothing that brings us closer to history.

Profile

I’ve been sewing from a very young age and created my first prom dress based on a 1950’s gown at aged 16. I went to University at 18 and studied ‘Costume Construction for Stage & Screen’ at the University of Glamorgan, based outside Cardiff. From here I learnt the basics of costume making including pattern cutting, the history of fashion and the different construction methods for theatre and film making costumes for panto dames, ‘steampunk’ Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mary Poppins re-creations amongst others.

Straight out of University, I landed a job as wardrobe assistant for Cameron Mackintosh’s UK tour of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and spent a year and a half travelling the UK with this theatre group. After this however, I realised my heart was still in costume making so I went back to College in York and studied at The Northern College of Costume.

Shortly after, I set up as a freelance Seamstress & Costume Maker and have made costumes for Leeds Playhouse, Hull Truck Theatre, Thorpe Park and Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre. I’ve also assisted on films and TV Series such as; ‘The Go-Between’, S3 ‘Ripper Street’, ‘Royal Night Out’ and ‘Dad’s Army’. I regularly work on cruise ships running alterations for the on-board show team’s costumes. For private clients, I’ve made prom and bridesmaid dresses, wedding dresses, cosplay costumes and historically re-created garments for re-enactments.

As well as working part-time as the PCI Costume Technician, I continue to freelance and every Tuesday evening, I teach a sewing social in Castleford.

My specialist skills include classical tutu making, historical and modern pattern drafting, knowledge of historical fashions and construction, corsetry, tailoring techniques, knowledge of fabrics and fibres, fabric dyeing, repairing and maintenance of costumes.

In my free time I love reading, bookbinding, binge watching period dramas and embroidery (mainly crewel & cross stitch.)
