Song of the Female Textile Workers is a one year UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) awarded project (2020-2021) in response to Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) call on the long term impact of and strategy on UK-China cultural and creative industries. The one year has seen the creation of a mixed reality performance produced entirely online across UK and China, staring Wang Rousang, a national class A performer at Shanghai Yue Opera House (上海越剧院国家一级演员王柔桑). The process explores UK-China digital theatre compatibility and audience connectivity through the theme of textile in/tangible cultural heritage in Shanghai and Leeds. The project is led by Dr. Haili Ma at PCI, in collaboration with Shanghai Yue Opera House, Shanghai Textile Museum, Leeds Industrial Museum, HUMAN VR and stage@leeds.
‘A fascinating new partnership project between Leeds and Shanghai is weaving together the histories of female textile workers through the power of Chinese opera!’
