An original performance devised by Level One Theatre and Performance students from the School of Performance and Cultural Industries.
It’s an evening in mid-May. We’re In a cab on the way to the theatre. We’re not too sure about what we’re going to see, apparently, it’s ‘experimental’, based on a book, and frankly, we’re more of a film goer. The cab drivers chatty, he’s heard of the author – not only that, turns out she was a fare, in this very cab, only the other day. Her name’s Jeanette. Winterson. They got talking and he told her he’s a writer too, he’s written some poetry, and a short story about George Mallory the Everest mountaineer - and she knew all about him. She knows all about the desire to reach beyond whatever boundaries appear to be in place or to set them clearly when there are none. That’s what she writes about – that’s all she writes about. Boundaries, desires.
We get to the theatre – and it looks like the company is still working on this play... we’re not sure how to get in. We ring the bell and the door opens by itself. We’re in a shop, selling freedom, just for one night...
This is our take on a book written in 2000, probably on one of the first Apple Mac Powerbooks. Its themes of love, desire, boundaries and freedom are as relevant to this generation as they were 25 years ago.
