The Real Thing is a comedy of love and infidelity, centred mainly around the married couple Henry, a playwright and Annie, an actor. Their relationship is the result of affairs, and delves into themes of honesty, commitment and Henry’s battle with the concept of ‘real love’. The play creates a tension between reality and performance for the audience, introducing characters such as Charlotte that challenge Henry’s perception of emotional truth. Witty, intellectual, and emotional, Stoppard’s play offers a timeless reflection of love.
