An adaption of the series of short stories entitled The Crystal Fountain by Malachi Whitaker about 1920s Bradford. A production by our Level One Theatre & Performance students.

‘X’ is the title we have chosen for our performance response to the work of Malachi Whitaker, who has been dubbed ‘the Bradford Chekhov’.   This story, among others we have included in our performance, is found in one of four volumes of her collected work. ‘The Crystal Fountain’, our source of inspiration, presents characters based on people she knew well, living and working in her local area, in the 1920s and 1930s.  In her short stories, people are searching for that elusive factor, ‘X’.  Some find it, then lose it, some are thwarted by cruelty, some long for it but never find it.   Along with Malachi and her memorable characters, we have attempted to find ‘X’, on the farm, in the chapel, on the hillside, in the street, or at home, and to do justice to her magical prose.
