‘Hell is other people’.
Garcin, Ines & Estelle are trapped in a room together for all eternity. They are in Hell for their misdeeds on Earth. Through flirting, storytelling and bitter arguments, they come to realise that Hell doesn’t have fire, or racks, or hot pokers. Merely by existing in the same room, each is the torturer of the other two.
‘No Exit’ is Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist parable about the influence of other people on the individual. The ‘Look’ of others means that one cannot be authentic so long as someone else is watching.
